The Open Smart Grid Platform preset @ Innovative Truth IX

By GXF

To promote the Open Smart Grid Platform within the energy and sustainability field, part of the Open Smart Grid Platform will be present at the Innovative Turth IX in Nijmegen. This Dutch conference covers the field of innovation, sustainable ICT and sustainable Energy. The theme of this year is “The Enabler for Sustainability & Innovation”.

The Open Smart Grid Platform fits in this theme due to the open source nature and use-cases. Open source allows others to innovate on top of existing open source software without (vendor) barriers. The existing Open Smart Grid platform use-cases could support a sustainable energy landscape. Load management helps to integrate renewable energy in the grid by controlling the load when needed. The smart metering domain supports insight in energy consumption and production and can enable flexible tariffs for example.

The Innovative Turth IX conference takes place 19th of June 2017 and is part of sustainable energy week . More information and how to register can be found on their (Dutch) website: https://aninnovativetruth.nl/

High available with Azure and AWS with the Open Smart Grid Platform

By GXF

A customer of the Open Smart Grid Platform founder Smart Society Services asked to show a high available cloud agnostic approach. They wanted to see that the Open Smart Grid Platform was running on the AWS (Amazon Web Services) and on the Microsoft Azure Cloud in a high availability setup.

An active-active setup was chosen to make this happen. When one public cloud provider stopped working, the other cloud provider took over the workload. This multi-cloud approach mitigates the risk of relying on 1 cloud provider. Even public clouds can fail. A Smart Society Services screen-cast on this topic will follow.

Trying the Open Smart Grid Platform made easy

By GXF

Installationopen-book

Based on open source community feedback and our own findings, Smart society services decided to invest in a better user experience to try the Open Smart Grid Platform. An easy procedure allows you to setup an virtual machine to play around with the open smart grid platform. The easy installation script uses Vagrant technology. A how-to guide can be found in the documentation.

Documentation

More improvements are made in the documentation. Especially for architects and developers who are evaluating the use of the open smart grid platform. The documentation now addresses more on redundancy, security and the several Open Smart Grid Platform domains and protocols.

Public issue tracker

To meet the current development needs, the development team decided to move away form Github issues to a public Jira board. This allows outsiders to see the current development issues and makes is more easy to contribute to the open source development. You can find out more on all the topics above in the updated documentation.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions related to the open smart grid platform. Open an issue on Github or send us an email opensource@smartsocietyservices.com (Github issue is preferred for faster response).

Zown launches microgrid successful proof of concept with The Open Smart Grid Platform

By GXF

Zown helps local communities to start and operate micro grids. These micro grids can be connected to the electricity grid or run off-grid.

Zown was looking for a communication platform to monitor & control, a physical micro-grid. Zown chose the Open Smart Grid Platform because of it’s open, inter operable, secure, and scalable architecture.

By now, the first results are positive. Zown proofed that the Open Smart Grid Platform is a useful part of their Micro Grid Platform. The proof of concept showed that Zown is able to read a solar panel and a battery via a local micro grid system. Furthermore, they can remotely switch the solar panel when the battery reaches it’s maximum or minimum capacity.

Zown will further develop the Micro Grid Platform (Including the Open Smart Grid Platform). The goal is to serve their first micro grid customers by the end of 2016.
