LF Energy Welcomes EVerest as a New Incubating Project

LF Energy, the open source foundation focused on the power systems sector, welcomes EVerest, an open source software stack designed to establish a common base layer for a unified EV charging ecosystem, as its 13th incubating project. LF Energy provides a neutral, collaborative community to build the shared digital investments that will enable the much needed transition off of fossil fuels to clean energy to help arrest climate change.

An entire ecosystem is helping to drive the transformation to electric vehicles —a huge part of the energy transition—by building and operating the necessary charging infrastructure. However, the industry has become complex and fragmented with multiple isolated solutions and inconsistent technology standards. This slows and threatens the adoption of EVs.

Created and open sourced by PIONIX GmbH to respond to these challenges, the main goal of EVerest is to develop and maintain an open source software stack for the EV charging infrastructure. Built on the concepts of modularity and customizability, by digitally abstracting the complexity of multiple standards and use cases, EVerest can run on any device from AC home chargers to public DC charging stations. By running on a lightweight Linux system inside the charging point, the project accelerates e-mobility adoption and enables new features for local energy management, PV-integration, grid friendliness, and more.

EVerest manages communication around energy between different players:

  • Car (e.g. EN IEC 61851, ISO 15118)
  • Local energy generation & batteries (e.g. Modbus, Sunspec)
  • Grid (including specific grid constraints)
  • Cloud backend / payment (e.g. OCCP 1.6)
  • User (interface)

EVerest is a smart interconnection layer, so users can focus on deploying unique features and don’t have to bother with implementing, integrating and maintaining dozens of needed protocols in a robust and compatible way.

“At LF Energy, we firmly believe that only open source has the speed and transformative power to change industries fast. Our mission is the decarbonization of the global economy by enabling the transformation of power systems, the transition to electric mobility, and the radical efficiency of the built environment. In this regard, EVerest is the perfect addition to our ecosystem,” said Shuli Goodman, Executive Director, Linux Foundation Energy.

LF Energy supports projects through a wide range of services, and the first step is joining as an incubating project. LF Energy provides a neutral open governance model to encourage commercial companies to build dependencies on EVerest. Transparent governance helps foster the growth and sustainability of this critical software.

EVerest welcomes the global community to contribute to this project and help it scale for the benefit of all. To learn more about EVerest, visit the project on GitHub and get the latest updates by subscribing to the EVerest general mailing list.
